Anthony Martial’s career at Manchester United appears to be coming to an end. The striker is reportedly seriously considering leaving the Red Devils in 2024.
Martial is one of the longest-serving players in the current MU squad. He was brought in from AS Monaco back in 2015.
Over eight years together, Martial’s career at MU has had its ups and downs. He has often been plagued by injuries, preventing him from contributing to the Red Devils to his fullest potential.
Football Insider claims that Martial is likely not going to represent Manchester United anymore. He is reported to want to depart from Old Trafford in 2024.
According to the report, Martial wants to leave MU because he doesn’t want to be a backup striker.
In the 2023/2024 season, Erik Ten Hag brought Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta. Slowly but surely, the 20-year-old striker has become the main striker for the Red Devils.
Martial himself believes he is still worthy of being MU’s main striker. So, rather than sitting on the bench, he prefers to leave.
Other reports in England suggest that Manchester United will not block Martial’s departure.
The Red Devils are reported to have run out of patience with the striker. After eight seasons together, the player’s performance has not improved, and it has been inconsistent.
Additionally, they could reduce their wage burden if Martial leaves. So, they are prepared to part ways with Martial.
According to rumors, Manchester United has already begun to search for a striker to replace Martial.
Napoli’s striker, Victor Osimhen, is reportedly now attracting the attention of the Red Devils.
Manchester United was very active in the summer transfer market in 2023. MU brought in a total of seven players to Old Trafford, costing more than £170 million to satisfy manager Erik ten Hag.
The seven players recruited by MU were goalkeeper Andre Onana, goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, midfielder Mason Mount, striker Rasmus Hojlund, anchor Sofyan Amrabat, and two defenders Jonny Evans and Sergio Reguilon.
Of these seven players, midfielder Christian Eriksen believes that Hojlund will be MU’s best acquisition in the summer of 2023. Eriksen praised his junior from the Danish national team.
According to Eriksen, MU did not make a mistake in spending £72 million to recruit Hojlund from Atalanta. In Eriksen’s view, Rasmus Hojlund is a perfect fit for MU and will be a new goal-scoring machine.
“I think Rasmus is a wise purchase. He is someone who fits the squad, fits the style of play, understands the coach’s ideas. He’s a good guy who works hard,” Eriksen said, as quoted from Tribal Football.
It’s not just his on-field performance that makes Eriksen confident Hojlund will succeed at MU. Eriksen is so impressed with what Hojlund has done and his willingness to accept input from seniors.
“He came to my house, and we meet every day at the club. I have given him advice, and he chose to stay close to the stadium and training facilities, so he listens. He is very mature in his approach to various things,” Eriksen emphasized.
Since joining last summer, Hojlund has already played eight times for MU in various competitions. He has scored a total of three goals.
However, in the Premier League, Hojlund has yet to find the net. His three goals were scored in the Champions League. Hojlund once scored a goal when MU lost to Arsenal in the Premier League, but it was disallowed by the referee because the ball had already left the field when it was passed to Hojlund.
