Arsenal Officially Sells Folarin Balogun to AS Monaco.

Speculations regarding Folarin Balogun’s future with Arsenal have reached their conclusion. The forward had previously expressed his desire to leave the Emirates Stadium if he was not part of Mikel Arteta’s plans. Balogun didn’t want to be loaned out for two consecutive seasons.

Based on the club’s official statement, Arsenal has agreed to sell Folarin Balogun to AS Monaco. The United States national team striker was acquired for a fee of £34.4 million. The two clubs have also reached an agreement regarding a relatively high-value sales clause.

The 22-year-old player has agreed to a five-year contract with Monaco. Balogun already has significant experience in Ligue 1, having scored 21 goals in 37 matches for Reims during the 2022/23 season.

Balogun was previously a target for Chelsea. However, in the end, the two London clubs couldn’t reach an agreement. Monaco gets the player they desire, while Balogun finds a club that can provide him with regular playing time in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

French Ligue 1 club AS Monaco has officially acquired Folarin Balogun from Arsenal on a five-year contract until June 2028.

“AS Monaco proudly announces the arrival of striker Folarin Balogun from Arsenal,” the club’s official announcement stated, as reported on Thursday.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, through his Twitter account, reported that Monaco redeemed Balogun from The Gunners for a total fee that includes add-ons amounting to €40 million or about £662 million.

Balogun becomes the second American player to join Monaco after Freddy Adu in 2008.

Joining Monaco brings the 22-year-old striker back to Ligue 1, a league that helped elevate his name. Last season, he scored 22 goals and provided three assists during his time with Stade Reims, according to Transfermarkt.

“Hello fans, this is Balogun. I’m thrilled to join AS Monaco. Can’t wait to meet you this weekend,” Balogun said after being introduced as Monaco’s new player.

During his time at Arsenal, Balogun struggled to shine, having scored only 2 goals and provided 1 assist in 10 appearances across all competitions. His career with the team based at the Emirates Stadium saw him being loaned out twice to Middlesbrough FC and Stade Reims. However, both loan spells failed to convince coach Mikel Arteta to make him the main striker.

This season, he also faced tough competition with three other strikers at Arsenal: Eddie Nketiah, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus.

With Les Rouge et Blanc, Monaco’s nickname, the 1.78-meter-tall striker becomes the club’s fifth signing this summer after Philipp Kohn (RB Salzburg), Wilfried Singo (Torino), Mohammed Salisu (Southampton), and Denis Zakaria (Juventus).

AS Monaco has officially secured Folarin Balogun from Arsenal in this summer’s transfer window. Paying a transfer fee of €45 million, Balogun becomes Monaco’s most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Folarin Balogun is one of the standout graduates from Arsenal’s academy. He was loaned out to Middlesbrough in the winter of 2022 while still in Arsenal U-23, before being promoted to the first team last summer.

Upon his promotion to the first team, Arsenal’s management immediately loaned Balogun to Ligue 1 team Stade Reims. With the French team, Balogun’s name began to attract attention from major European clubs. This was because he made 39 appearances, contributing 22 goals and three assists.

His outstanding performance as a 22-year-old American player raised Balogun’s profile in the summer transfer market. Chelsea, Real Sociedad, and even Inter Milan queued up to secure his signature.

Despite receiving offers from major European teams, Balogun decided to accept Monaco’s offer. After a successful season with Stade Reims last year, he stated that Ligue 1 is the right place for him.

According to 90min, Balogun signed a five-year contract with Les Rouge et Blanc. He is even expected to make his debut with Monaco this weekend when Adi Hutter’s team hosts RC Lens in the third week of Ligue 1, early on Sunday (September 3).

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s management hopes that Balogun can achieve success with Monaco in his professional football career.

“Folarin Balogun has joined Ligue 1 team AS Monaco. We thank Folarin for his contribution to Arsenal, from the Academy to the first team, and wish him all the best at AS Monaco.”
