VADUZ – Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 128th international goal, extending his world record, as Portugal defeated Liechtenstein in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
The hosts managed to hold off Portugal, who had already secured their place in Germany, in the first half in Vaduz.
However, 38-year-old Ronaldo from Al-Nassr hit the post and then unleashed a powerful shot after receiving a pass from Diogo Jota in the first minute of the second half.
Joao Cancelo scored their second goal with a curved shot, and Goncalo Ramos’ effort was disallowed.
Ronaldo remained prolific for his country despite leaving Manchester United to play in the Saudi league, scoring 10 goals for Portugal this year.
The previous men’s goal-scoring world record was held by Ali Daei with 108 goals for Iran.zzzzzzzzzzz
Elsewhere in Group J, Slovakia secured their place in Euro 2024 – in second place behind Portugal – with a 4-2 victory over Iceland.
Luxembourg – who will be in next year’s play-offs – defeated Savo Milosevic’s Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1.
