Exclusive: Angela Bassett Playfully Admits She’ll Need ‘Therapy’ After Sending Her Twins to College

Angela Bassett and Husband Courtney B. Vance Prepare for Empty Nest as Twins Head to College

Angela Bassett, the celebrated actress known for her roles in hit movies like Black Panther and TV shows like 9-1-1, is facing a bittersweet moment in her life as her twins, son Slater and daughter Bronwyn, are gearing up to head off to college. Bassett, alongside her husband, actor Courtney B. Vance, recently walked the red carpet at the season 7 premiere of 9-1-1 in Los Angeles, where she opened up about the impending departure of her children.

“I’m feeling very sad about it,” Bassett shared with a laugh. “I’m excited for them, I’m sad for me.” As her children embark on college tours and search for the right educational fit, Bassett is coming to terms with the reality of sending her adult offspring out into the world to find their own paths. She even joked about the possibility of seeking therapy to cope with the emotional turmoil.

Both Bassett and Vance attended Yale School of Drama, where they first met years ago before developing their long-lasting romance. Bassett revealed that she is subtly trying to influence her children to follow in their parents’ footsteps and attend their alma mater. “I’m pushing it but not too loudly,” she admitted. “I’m pushing it by keeping my mouth closed for now.”

In the midst of all the family changes, Bassett is focused on her work on the new season of 9-1-1, which recently transitioned from FOX to ABC. She described the upcoming season as having “incredibly high” stakes and reflected on her character, LAPD Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash, whom she has portrayed since the series premiered.

“When [Athena] is too old for these streets, to keep them safe,” Bassett mused about how she will know when it’s the right time to step back from the show. While she doesn’t believe that time is imminent, she acknowledged the rapid passage of time. “A hundred went by pretty quickly… So maybe a hundred more? I mean we have the best cast, best crew and really, it flew by. It’s a pretty amazing feat, but it went by in a flash.”

Fans can catch the premiere of 9-1-1 season 7 on ABC on Mar. 14. With Bassett’s emotional journey on the show and in her personal life, viewers can expect a powerful and heartfelt performance from the talented actress.

In conclusion, as Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance navigate the transition into empty nesters, they continue to thrive in their careers and support their children’s journey into adulthood. Their love and commitment to each other and their family serve as an inspiration to many.
