“It’s an aspect that I myself overlooked” – Jon Rahm reconsiders his opinion on LIV Golf’s team format after a controversial move

Jon Rahm expressed his admiration for LIV Golf’s team format in an interview following his decision to join the breakaway league.

Confirming his move to LIV Golf on Thursday, Dec. 7, Rahm’s deal was rumored to be around $550 million, although neither he nor LIV disclosed the exact amount.

In an interview with LIV’s broadcaster, David Feherty, Rahm reflected on the factors that influenced his decision. When asked about whether people underestimated the team concept of the PIF-sponsored league, Rahm acknowledged that many, including himself, had initially overlooked that aspect.

“I don’t think it’s discussed enough. You have some of the best players globally who are now leaders of their own teams, partners in this massive, growing global business,” Rahm stated. “It’s an aspect of the game that I overlooked, and now it’s a reality. I can’t wait to delve into it, learn more, and hopefully, enhance both my team and my brand.”

Rahm highlighted that the team aspect was not traditionally associated with golf but has now become an integral part. Drawing parallels with other major sporting events, he emphasized how fans rally behind their favorite teams.

“Growing up as a massive Athletic Bilbao fan, I realized it has a unique appeal, much more than I initially gave it credit for, even in golf. It’s something I’m passionate about and hope to learn a lot from and improve upon,” Rahm added.

While Rahm is expected to have his own team, the name is yet to be announced, and it remains uncertain whether other PGA Tour players will join him in forming a squad.

In the earlier part of the interview, Rahm mentioned that it was the league’s innovation that caught his attention, describing it as something he wanted to explore.

“I believe in the growth of the game of golf,” he said. “I’ve often spoken about how Seve improved the game of golf in Spain, and I’ve always said how I would like to do the same thing over there. If I can reach a broader audience, it would be amazing.”

Rahm expressed confidence that this move would help him expand his fanbase.
