Japan introduces the new Toyota GR86 Carbon Fiber Rear Spoiler

Toyota Expands Accessory Lineup for GR86 with Performance-Enhancing Carbon Fiber Rear Spoiler

Toyota’s aftermarket division has recently launched a new accessory body kit for its GR86 sports coupe, featuring a carbon fiber rear spoiler that not only adds a stylish touch but also enhances performance. The Japanese car giant already offers a range of aerodynamic improvements for the GR86 in its domestic market, and this new addition aims to complement the existing modifications while providing tangible benefits on the race track.

The latest addition to Toyota’s accessory lineup is a ‘gooseneck’ style rear spoiler, priced at 517,000 yen (A$5,500). The rear wing is constructed using aluminum “gooseneck” brackets that are attached to the vertical surface of the trunk lid, unlike conventional spoilers that rely on horizontal trunk surface attachment. The rest of the spoiler is made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic, a lightweight and durable material commonly used in Toyota vehicles. In fact, the Yaris hot hatch already incorporates a carbon fiber roof.

Toyota utilized computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a computer-based method, to determine the optimal shape of the wing. Through extensive aerodynamic simulations, the company optimized the downforce while minimizing any negative impact on drag. The wing is adjustable in three stages, allowing drivers to customize its angle depending on their driving style and road conditions. The options include zero degrees, 1.25 degrees, and 2.5 degrees. According to Toyota, the wing enhances steering stability at high speeds and while cornering.

To maximize the GR86’s overall aerodynamics, Toyota recommends pairing the new rear spoiler with the company’s GR aerodynamics package, which starts at 362,000 yen (AU$3,850). This combination ensures that the car’s aerodynamics remain balanced and prevent any rearward drift. The GR86 is equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 174 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque.

Unfortunately for Australian GR86 owners, these parts are currently exclusive to the Japanese market. However, Toyota’s expansion of its accessory lineup demonstrates the company’s commitment to offering performance-enhancing options for its sports coupe.

Toyota’s expansion of its GR86 accessory lineup reflects the brand’s dedication to meeting the diverse needs of car enthusiasts. With the addition of the performance-enhancing carbon fiber rear spoiler, the GR86 sports coupe becomes even more appealing to customers seeking both style and substance. While these particular accessories may not be immediately available in international markets, their introduction in the Japanese market suggests the potential for future releases in other regions. As Toyota continues to push the boundaries of performance and design, fans of the GR86 can look forward to exploring further modification options in the near future.
