Manchester United is reportedly open to selling Scott McTominay at the right price, as they can command a high fee for the 26-year-old player.
As reported by Tribun Jogja from 90Min.com, Manchester United is open to selling Scott McTominay in the summer, and the fans are also open to the idea.
The 26-year-old player wants to continue with the club and has shown that he has the talent to succeed here despite spending years on the sidelines.
Since breaking into the first team under Jose Mourinho, McTominay has made 215 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United.
He won his first major trophy last season by capturing the Carabao Cup. During the summer, the Red Devils rejected an offer from West Ham, while some sources claim that The Hammers were willing to spend a significant amount on the 26-year-old player.
Instead, Manchester United sold Fred and retained McTominay. While further reports suggest that the club is open to selling him in January, they are now not interested in doing business in the next window for the 26-year-old player.
McTominay recently came to Manchester United’s rescue against Brentford when the game was heading for a heavy defeat for Erik ten Hag. The Scottish international came off the bench and scored two goals in extra time, including the winning goal.
Although there have been talks of giving the 26-year-old player a chance to start after the current international break, Ten Hag is reportedly happy to keep him. The club can keep him until next summer; they are open to selling him at the right price.
Therefore, we may see Manchester United demanding more than the reported £30 million offered by West Ham. McTominay has also demonstrated his abilities with his performances for Scotland during the Euro 2024 qualification campaign. His goals have taken them to the brink of qualification for the finals.
Bayern Munich is also considering approaching McTominay in January as an alternative to Joao Palhinha. With Manchester United wanting to keep him, and Ten Hag wanting to increase his playing time, the Scottish player may choose to stay here.
However, Ten Hag may approve the sale if Manchester United receives a surprising offer from interested parties, with Newcastle United also participating in the race.
For now, his future appears safe at Old Trafford, but circumstances may change next summer when he has one year left on his contract. The Red Devils are likely to extend his contract for another year through an option, which is standard in all their agreements.
Rumors of McTominay’s departure from Old Trafford have been circulating since the 2022/2023 season. Many believed he would leave in the summer of 2023.
Indeed, the 26-year-old midfielder was almost on the verge of leaving when West Ham made a £50 million offer. Manchester United did not immediately accept it.
Besides wanting a higher price, Manchester United listened to Erik ten Hag’s request to give McTominay more time.
That trust has slowly been answered by McTominay. He has been impressive with just six appearances in the early part of the 2023/2024 season.
Of the six games, McTominay has only started twice. His position has been completely taken over by Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.
Nevertheless, his contribution remained maximum despite limited playing time. McTominay even scored two crucial goals in just three minutes as Manchester United defeated Brentford 2-1.
Not only at Manchester United, McTominay has also been impressive with the Scotland national team. He scored six goals from six Euro 2024 qualifying matches.
McTominay is now said to have passed his critical phase. Manchester United is slowly eliminating the option to release him immediately.
In a Daily Star report, Manchester United is confirmed not to sell McTominay in January 2024. Ten Hag is confident that the player will be useful to the team until the end of next season.
Not only will he not be sold, but Manchester United is now also considering giving him a new contract. His contract is now due to expire in 2025.
Discussions about the new contract will be held before the middle of the 2023/2024 season.
Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta has refused to rule out the return of Manchester United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana to the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. Onana has come under significant pressure after a rocky start to his career at Old Trafford, with errors against Brentford in the narrow 2-1 win over Manchester United.
With Onana’s performance a cause for concern, Inter’s CEO Marotta spoke about the potential return of the Cameroonian player to Milan.
“I cannot predict the future, but in football, anything can happen. Certainly, it’s been a good journey for Onana and us,” Marotta said, as quoted by 90min on Sunday (15/10/2023).
The 27-year-old goalkeeper joined Manchester United from Inter for £50 million last summer on a five-year contract. His arrival divided Manchester United fans as he immediately displaced goalkeeper David de Gea, who had long been a key figure for the Red Devils.
However, Onana’s performances have yet to win over the hearts of Manchester United fans. Moreover, he has often made costly blunders.
On the other hand, legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel revealed that he has spoken to Onana.
“I tried to talk to him about what it’s like to be at Manchester United, what you need to take,” the Danish man said.
Onana’s arrival was desired by Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag, as they previously worked together at the Eredivisie club Ajax Amsterdam.
This season, Manchester United has suffered four defeats in the Premier League and two losses in the Champions League against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.
