Manchester United legend Roy Keane has shared his thoughts on the situation with Andre Onana.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has shared his thoughts on the situation with Andre Onana. He believes that the goalkeeper will find it difficult to stay at Old Trafford if he continues to make mistakes.

As we already know, Onana is Manchester United’s new first-choice goalkeeper. He replaced David De Gea, whose contract was not renewed by Manchester United’s management.

So far, almost every week, Onana has been the target of criticism. This is largely due to the goalkeeper’s frequent blunders under Manchester United’s goal.

Keane mentioned that the situation with Onana is becoming worrisome. “Yes, he [Onana] is having a very poor start at Manchester United,” Keane said to The Overlap.

According to Keane, Manchester United’s goalkeepers are always in the spotlight. When a Manchester United goalkeeper makes a mistake, he must be prepared to bear a heavy responsibility.

“We are talking about a crucial position at any big club. As a Manchester United goalkeeper, he must have a strong character to face the problems that come his way,” Keane continued.

So far, he has made six, seven, or eight mistakes that have resulted in goals. I think this is not a good start for him.”

Keane openly stated that Onana needs to work hard to prevent this negative trend from continuing.

He pointed out that many top goalkeepers have seen their careers ruined due to poor starts at new clubs. So, he believes Onana could face a similar fate if his performance does not improve.

“We know that there are many good goalkeepers who have joined Manchester United. However, when they have a difficult start, their career [at Manchester United] is beyond saving,” Keane added.

Onana himself is determined to add to his clean sheet record with Manchester United. The goalkeeper is targeting a clean sheet when his team faces Sheffield United after the international break.

David De Gea is currently in Manchester. The Spanish goalkeeper has caused a stir among Manchester United supporters who are calling for his return.

During the summer, De Gea left Old Trafford. His contract with the Red Devils had expired.

Manchester United replaced De Gea with Andre Onana. The Cameroonian goalkeeper was signed from Inter Milan for £47 million.

Having played 11 times in all competitions, Onana has already conceded 19 goals in all competitions. Manchester United has only recorded three clean sheets with Onana as the goalkeeper.

Onana has made several blunders, with the most recent being when Manchester United beat Brentford due to his lack of alertness. Fortunately for him, Scott McTominay eventually scored two goals in injury time to secure a 2-1 victory for Manchester United.

De Gea posted a story on Instagram @d_degeaofficial. He is at a tennis court located in Manchester.

De Gea’s post can also be found on other social media platforms, and it has received numerous responses from Manchester United supporters.

Andre Onana was specifically brought in by Erik ten Hag to be Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper. However, his performance has made the situation complicated.

Manchester United is experiencing an unconvincing start to the season. Out of the 11 matches played in all competitions, ‘The Red Devils’ have only secured five victories, with the rest ending in defeats.

This series of results has put two individuals in a difficult position: Erik ten Hag and Andre Onana. Ten Hag is starting to be questioned after impressively leading Manchester United to a top-four finish and winning the English League Cup last season.

Even after being supported by the management with the signings of Mason Mount, Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, and Sofyan Amrabat, Ten Hag has not seemed to advance Manchester United. Specifically for Onana, he is also under massive pressure.

Brought in as the replacement for David de Gea in the first-choice goalkeeper position, he has already conceded 19 goals from 11 appearances. This is in addition to numerous blunders that have put him in the spotlight.

Former Fulham and Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer believes that Onana is not fundamentally a good shot-stopper. So far, he has not been able to utilize his strengths, particularly his distribution of the ball, due to the aggressive pressing in England.

“I’ve watched Onana quite often in recent years. I know he played well last season at Inter, but I’ve always questioned how good of a goalkeeper he really is,” Schwarzer said to Optus Sport as quoted by Football365.

“I know, I know he’s good with his feet. But he also played in a league where his team would dominate the game, whether at Ajax or Inter, and have more time to control the ball. They weren’t pressed as much.”

“His high energy and tempo aren’t the same. So it has always been a big question mark as well. So if he doesn’t play well with his feet, in what other areas is he good?” he added.

Schwarzer compared him to former Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. At that time, Bravo became optimal because he was supported by a team capable of maximizing his qualities.

The former Australian national team goalkeeper believes that Onana will be in a more difficult situation if Ten Hag is eventually sacked by Manchester United.

“We saw it with Claudio Bravo when he first came to Manchester City. A goalkeeper who is very, very good with his feet, but found a hole in his technique, it feels like he is not the best goalkeeper,” he continued.

“To be honest, I feel Bravo is a better goalkeeper than Onana, let’s be honest. So yeah, it’s a total disaster. His start at Old Trafford couldn’t be any worse.”

“I don’t know if he’ll be able to get himself out of trouble right now. And I think if Ten Hag loses his job, Onana will be done,” he concluded.
