Maximizing Finances: How Spreadsheets became my go-to Solution on iPhone

In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world, managing personal finances has become more important than ever. With younger generations facing financial challenges like never before, it is essential to keep track of day-to-day income and expenses. Whether it’s the daily latte or monthly rent, every expense adds up, and having a clear understanding of where your money is going is crucial.

The good news is that there are countless services and applications available to help you stay on top of your finances, from simple expense trackers to comprehensive budgeting tools. However, not all of these options may be suitable for everyone. For some, like myself, adapting to classic spreadsheets has proven to be the best approach.

As someone who values speed and efficiency, I have found that many personal accounting applications fall short in these areas. While they may offer detailed graphs and categorized data, they often require too many steps to record a simple expense, or they overwhelm me with too much information. Frustrated by this, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I turned to Numbers, a spreadsheet application, to create a system that works for me. Using iCloud, I have created two spreadsheets to manage my personal accounting. The first is a simple daily expense tracker that I can easily update from my iPhone. The second is a more complex spreadsheet that provides a monthly summary of all my finances, including bank and investment account balances.

While I acknowledge that there are applications with more attractive interfaces, nothing beats the simplicity and speed of my customized spreadsheet system. Plus, I have the freedom to modify and improve it to suit my needs, something that is not always possible with pre-built applications. Additionally, the sensitive nature of personal financial data makes me hesitant to entrust it to just any developer.

For those who prefer using applications for personal accounting, there are certainly many options available. However, if you find that none of them meet your specific needs, consider taking a page from my book and creating your own system. After all, when it comes to managing your finances, it’s important to find a method that works for you. Whether it’s through spreadsheets or the latest tech, the most important thing is to stay informed and in control of your money.
