Newcastle United Captain Jamaal Lascelles Faces Assault After Defending Brother in Nightclub Altercation

Newcastle Uniteds captain, Jamaal Lascelles, was subjected to a brutal attack by a group of men after he intervened to protect his younger brother outside a citycentre nightclub.

A widely circulated video on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) shows Lascelles engaging in a physical altercation as he is attacked by multiple men.

The incident unfolded as Lascelles tried to calm the situation and assist someone who had fallen to the ground. Amidst this, he was unexpectedly punched from behind, which seemed to agitate him further. Lascelles then pursued one of the attackers and retaliated with a punch of his own.

Reports suggest that the gang, which had been outside the Chinawhite nightclub, had even threatened to shoot” the centreback during the violent confrontation on the street.

Police were called to the scene on Westgate Road in Newcastle during the early hours of Sunday, August 20, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the violent incident.

Northumbria Police released a statement: “Shortly after 4 am on Sunday, Aug 20, we received a report of disorder involving a number of people on Westgate Road in Newcastle. Officers attended, however it is believed those involved had already left the scene. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The police are appealing for witnesses and information to aid their investigation.

Insiders report that Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is displeased with Lascelles for finding himself in such a situation, particularly late at night. Nevertheless, Newcastle has heard Lascelles’s account of the events and believes that he acted in self-defense.

Despite interest from Turkish club Besiktas during this transfer window, Newcastle has been reluctant to part with their captain due to financial constraints preventing them from signing a replacement.

The incident reportedly began when Lascelles’s 19-year-old brother was subjected to an unprovoked attack, being elbowed in the throat. Lascelles intervened by pushing the assailant away, which prompted others to join the assault. A bottle of vodka was thrown at Lascelles during the altercation.

In the chaos, a friend of Lascelles was rendered unconscious and required hospitalization. The assailants managed to flee, and no arrests have been made yet. The police are continuing their investigations.

The club has chosen not to comment at this time, but Eddie Howe is expected to address the situation during his upcoming press conference.
