Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku Set to Miss Season Opener Due to Injury

Chelsea’s prospects have been marred as Christopher Nkunku is set to sit out the beginning of the season due to a knee injury.

The absence of Christopher Nkunku for an extended period looms over Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea, casting a shadow on their upcoming Premier League opener against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.

Nkunku, aged 25, sustained an injury during the team’s final pre-season match against Borussia Dortmund in Chicago last week, which ended in a 1-1 draw, thanks to a late equalizer by Mason Burstow.

The French forward, who was acquired from RB Leipzig earlier this summer in a reported £52 million deal, had to leave the field in the 22nd minute following a knee knock from a challenge with Mats Hummels.

In an official statement, Chelsea revealed, “Nkunku has suffered a knee injury that will keep him out of action for an extended period. He has undergone surgery and will now commence a rehabilitation program under the guidance of the club’s medical team.”

Nkunku exhibited his prowess during Chelsea’s tour of the United States, managing to score three times.

However, this is not the first time the versatile attacker has been plagued by injury. The former Paris Saint-Germain player missed the 2022 World Cup due to a knee injury sustained in a 50-50 challenge with his France teammate Eduardo Camavinga during a training session.

Nkunku didn’t return to action with Leipzig until February, yet he impressively concluded as the Bundesliga’s co-leading scorer with 16 goals from 25 appearances.

Pochettino now faces the challenge of relying on fellow summer signing Nicolas Jackson to lead the attacking line. Meanwhile, Armando Broja was absent from the American tour to continue his rehabilitation at Cobham after suffering a severe knee injury last season.

In addition to Nkunku’s absence, Pochettino can call upon the talents of players like Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Noni Madueke. However, there is no denying that the loss of Nkunku presents a significant setback for the team.
