Olivia Munn Shares She Underwent a Hysterectomy Amid Battle Against Cancer

Olivia Munn revealed in a new interview that in addition to undergoing a double mastectomy, she also underwent a hysterectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

On Mother’s Day, Olivia Munn shared a touching yet hopeful personal update on her journey to recovery from breast cancer.

The 43-year-old actress disclosed that in April, she decided to undergo a hysterectomy, which marks her fifth surgery since being diagnosed with the disease last year.

“Now I’ve had a complete hysterectomy,” she told Vogue in an interview posted on May 12, two months after publicly announcing that she was diagnosed with luminal B breast cancer in both breasts. “I removed my uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.”

According to the magazine, Munn opted for the procedure instead of continuing to receive Lupron injections, or leuprolide, which lower estrogen levels in the body—a hormone that fuels certain types of cancer she is battling. The medication, also commonly used in IVF treatment and egg freezing, can cause various side effects such as extreme fatigue. For Munn, it was unbearable.

“Unbearable fatigue, to the next level,” she said. “I would wake up in the morning and almost immediately need to go back to bed.”

The Newsroom alum, who shares a 2-year-old son named Malcolm with her partner John Mulaney, continued, “If you ask Malcolm, ‘Where does Daddy work?’ He’ll run to [his father’s] desk, and if you ask him, ‘Where does Mommy work?’ He’ll point to my bed. It’s so sweet. But at the same time, it breaks my heart because it’s a representation of me in his eyes.”

Previously, Munn underwent a complete double mastectomy to remove all tissue in both breasts, accompanied by lymph node dissection, breast reconstruction surgery, and nipple delay, which enhances blood flow and circulation to the area before mastectomy.

She told Vogue that although the complete hysterectomy was a major decision, it was the best for her, adding, “I need to be here for my family.”

Though the actress won’t be able to conceive, she and John still plan to expand their family through surrogacy. Munn told Vogue that she has frozen her eggs three times since the age of 33, and the last time was last year after learning about her breast cancer diagnosis, and that “two healthy embryos” were created from her last IVF cycle.

“A surrogate mother is no longer scary to me because there’s nothing I can do,” Munn said. “I don’t have the ability to carry a baby anymore, so if we want to build our family, this is our option.”

She continued, “This journey has made me realize how grateful I am to have the option not only to fight cancer but also to have more children if we want, because I know many people don’t have that option.”

After Munn’s interview was posted, John paid tribute to his partner on his Instagram Stories. “My son has an amazing mother and he knows it,” the comedian wrote. “This is the most loving and craziest relationship I’ve ever seen. Happy Mother’s Day, Liv.”
