Olivia Rodrigo Responds to Theory That “Vampire” Song Is About Taylor Swift

After sparking rumors of a feud with Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo is addressing the speculation surrounding her song “Vampire.

Amidst ongoing rumors of a strained relationship with Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo has chosen to clarify the inspiration behind her song “Vampire.”

For several months now, fans have been speculating that Olivia’s song “Vampire,” featured on her upcoming album “Guts,” might be directed at the “Blank Space” singer, with whom she shared a friendly rapport in the past. Olivia recently broke her silence on this matter during an interview.

“How do I answer this?” the 20-year-old artist questioned during her conversation with The Guardian newspaper. “I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better not to confine a song to being about just one thing.”

Olivia went on to state in the interview, which was published on September 2, “I was very surprised when people thought that.”

Speculation that “Vampire,” released in late June, is related to Taylor Swift seemed to arise from the lyrics, which include the lines, “Bloodsucker, fame f–ker, bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire.”

Taylor Swift, known for hits like “Style,” has not publicly commented on the song or the feud rumors. These rumors first emerged in 2021 when Olivia credited Taylor with part of the songwriting and royalties for her track “Deja Vu” due to similarities with Taylor’s 2019 hit single “Cruel Summer.”

“When it comes to how the music industry operates and the legal side, I was quite inexperienced,” revealed the star of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” in her conversation with The Guardian. “Now, I feel like I understand the industry much better and am more prepared in that regard. It wasn’t something I had thought about extensively.”

In June of the same year, just before the release of “Vampire,” rumors of a feud between Olivia and Taylor resurfaced. This occurred when Taylor Swift invited fellow pop star Sabrina Carpenter, who many fans believe is the “blonde girl” referenced in Olivia’s debut single “drivers license,” which is rumored to be about her ex, Joshua Bassett, to open for her on her ongoing Eras tour. Notably, Olivia has not been seen at any of these concerts, in contrast to numerous other celebrities.

In previous years, Olivia and Taylor had seemed to maintain a friendly relationship. In April 2020, Olivia performed a cover of Taylor’s “Cruel Summer” for MTV’s Alone Together Jam Session, prompting Taylor to express her admiration on Instagram Stories: “THE TALENT. Love This!!! Thanks for this beautiful performance @olivia.rodrigo @mtv.”

In January 2021, Olivia took to Instagram to share her excitement as her song “drivers license” reached the No. 3 spot on the top US songs chart on iTunes, right below two of Taylor Swift’s songs. Taylor herself commented, saying, “I say that’s my baby, and I’m really proud.”

In March of the same year, Olivia mentioned on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up that Taylor had gifted her a ring similar to the one Taylor wore while writing her album “Red.” She also referred to Taylor as “the kindest individual in the whole world.”

Finally, the two artists met in person in May 2021 at the BRIT Awards. Olivia later posted a picture on Instagram of them making silly faces at the event, captioning the post with, “Brits were a dream. never wanna leave!!!”
