Report: Police are currently looking for the perpetrator of the mobile radar arson.

Mobile Speed Camera Unit Set on Fire in Tasmania, Prompting Wildfire Risk Warning

Tasmania Police are currently investigating an incident involving a mobile speed camera unit that was set on fire over the weekend. The radar fitted to the trailer was intentionally set alight at approximately 2:20 am on Sunday, April 7, 2024, in New Norfolk, which is approximately 35km northeast of Hobart. The incident is being treated as suspicious, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the vandalism.

According to a report on the website Tasmanian Pulse, the incident is believed to be a case of arson, and it is unclear at this time whether the perpetrator was captured on one of the unit’s six CCTV cameras, which transmit images to a base of operations. Images posted online show the mobile radar being carried on the back of a crane, with significant fire damage visible on one side of the unit.

In addition to the intentional damage to property, authorities have raised concerns about the incident leading to a significant risk of wildfire in the local area. This latest act of vandalism against a speed camera unit comes less than three months after a similar incident in Queensland, where a portable mobile phone detection camera and a camera used to monitor seat belt use were set on fire.

Earlier this year in February 2024, Victoria Police charged a 15-year-old boy after he allegedly damaged an unmarked speed camera car and kicked the side mirror before fleeing. In January 2024, a group of men allegedly attacked another speed camera car in Melbourne’s north, jumping on the vehicle and smashing windows with stones.

Tasmania Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the recent incident or has information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online through their website. The act of vandalism against the mobile speed camera unit is a serious offense, and authorities are working diligently to identify those responsible.

The potential for fires to be started intentionally through acts of vandalism poses a significant risk to the community and surrounding areas. As investigations continue, authorities are emphasizing the importance of adhering to local laws and regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The incident serves as a reminder of the detrimental consequences of vandalism and the importance of maintaining law and order within the community. Acts of vandalism not only result in property damage but can also pose serious risks to public safety, as seen in this case with the heightened risk of wildfires in the area.

The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly. By working together, we can help protect our communities and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
