“Roberto Almaguer: Remembering a Dedicated Father and Businessman”
Roberto Almaguer, a hardworking Mexican immigrant, was tragically shot and killed in his taqueria in Houston, Texas. The devastating crime has shaken the Hispanic community, as Almaguer was a devoted family man with a wife and three children. The incident occurred in the early hours of October 13, 2023, during a violent robbery in the Glenbrook Valley neighborhood.
According to reports, an armed robber entered Tacos El Güero, where Almaguer was working with two employees, as they were preparing to close for the night. The assailant demanded money at gunpoint before firing several shots and fleeing the scene. One of the employees immediately called the Houston Police Department (HPD) for help.
When HPD officers arrived at the scene, they found Almaguer gravely wounded from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics from the Houston Fire Department (HFD) were also called but sadly couldn’t save him. Detectives from the HPD Homicide Division promptly initiated an investigation into the brutal crime.
The community’s response to the merciless murder of Roberto Almaguer has been one of outrage and sorrow. As HPD continues to search for surveillance footage from nearby businesses, local residents and workers have expressed their deep pain and indignation. Osleidy Abreu, a Cuban immigrant who works across the street from Tacos El Güero, condemned the senseless act, saying, “It is such a great shame…such evil is incomprehensible! It is not fair that a good, hardworking, and kind man who only sacrificed for his family was killed like this.”
Juan Enríquez, Almaguer’s brother-in-law, has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for his funeral expenses. Describing Almaguer as a dedicated local entrepreneur who started with a sushi business before progressing to Tacos El Güero, Enríquez recounts the events of the fateful night and pleads for support to give his brother-in-law the burial he deserves and to help his grieving family.
The tragic murder of Roberto Almaguer is yet another alarming incident in the ongoing crisis of gun violence in the United States. According to data from the National Archive of Gun Violence, a staggering 34,120 people have been shot to death in the country in 2023 alone. Out of these victims, 15,046 were murdered while 19,074 took their own lives. Additionally, there have been 548 mass shootings, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals each.
The loss of Roberto Almaguer has left a void in the hearts of his loved ones and the community. As the investigation continues, the hope for justice remains strong. In the face of such senseless violence, it is essential that efforts to address gun violence are intensified to prevent further tragedies like this from occurring.
