“Ryan O’Neal, Star of ‘Love Story’ and ‘Peyton Place,’ Passes Away at 82

Ryan O’Neal, the Oscar-nominated actor renowned for his roles in iconic films such as “Love Story” and “Paper Moon,” has sadly passed away, as confirmed by his son, Patrick, who shared the news on social media. Ryan O’Neal was reported to be 82 years old at the time of his death.

“My dad passed away peacefully today, with his loving team by his side supporting him and loving him as he would us,” Patrick O’Neal wrote on Friday.

He added, “My father, Ryan O’Neal, has always been my hero. I looked up to him, and he was always bigger than life.”

Ryan O’Neal first gained widespread recognition in 1964 with his breakout role on the nighttime soap opera “Peyton Place.” Following various TV shows in the 1960s, he left an enduring mark on the film industry in the 1970 adaptation of Erich Segal’s novel “Love Story,” where he starred alongside Ali MacGraw. The film, a poignant tale of a wealthy Ivy Leaguer and an outspoken girl, became a massive success and solidified O’Neal as a classic leading man. His performance earned him an Oscar nomination and popularized the memorable line, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”

In addition to his success in drama, O’Neal showcased his comedic talent in films like “What’s Up, Doc?” and “The Main Event,” where he starred opposite Barbra Streisand. Streisand expressed her sadness on X (formerly Twitter), describing O’Neal as “funny and charming.”

Ryan O’Neal also starred in a sequel to “Love Story” titled “Oliver’s Story,” though it did not achieve the same success as its predecessor. His diverse career included notable roles in films such as “Paper Moon,” where he starred alongside his daughter Tatum O’Neal, who won an Academy Award for best supporting actress. He also featured in the Stanley Kubrick-directed period piece “Barry Lyndon.”

Off-screen, O’Neal was known for his high-profile relationship with actress and pin-up model Farrah Fawcett. The relationship, along with his earlier marriages to Joanna Moore and Leigh Taylor-Young, often fueled tabloid headlines.

Born in Los Angeles, O’Neal initially trained as a professional boxer before pursuing acting. His early career included appearances in TV westerns, leading to his regular role on “Peyton Place.”

In his later years, O’Neal continued to make notable contributions to television with recurring roles on shows like “Bones” and “Bull,” as well as appearances on “Desperate Housewives” and the reboot of “90210.”

The actor’s relationship with his daughter Tatum O’Neal was strained for many years, with their struggles documented in the reality series “Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals” on OWN in 2011. However, in 2020, Tatum O’Neal’s son shared on social media that the family had reconciled.

Ryan O’Neal is survived by four children, including Tatum O’Neal, Griffin O’Neal (with Joanna Moore), Redmond James O’Neal (with Farrah Fawcett), and Patrick O’Neal (with Leigh Taylor-Young). His brother, actor Kevin O’Neal, passed away earlier this year.”
