London, November 24, 2023 – Chelsea secured a crucial victory against Paris FC in the Women’s Champions League group stage at Stamford Bridge. Sam Kerr shone by scoring a hat-trick that propelled Chelsea to victory over Paris FC.
After a draw in their opening match against Real Madrid, Chelsea initiated their European campaign with this win, courtesy of goals from Sam Kerr. However, the performance of Chelsea under the guidance of coach Emma Hayes was not entirely satisfying.
Sam Kerr opened the scoring after receiving a brilliant pass from Lauren James in the first half before heading in Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s cross in the second half.
The pinnacle of her performance came when Kerr completed her hat-trick with a spectacular chip from outside the penalty box in the 55th minute, while substitute Sophie Ingle added a fourth goal in injury time.
Paris FC created several dangerous opportunities and managed to level the score in the 38th minute through Thea Greboval’s header.
Chelsea’s mistakes in possession seemed to frustrate coach Emma Hayes, especially in the first half, but the home team improved as the game progressed, gaining additional energy from substitute Fran Kirby.
The English forward played a significant role in the creation of Kerr’s second goal and provided a brilliant through ball, unfortunately not well-utilized by the Australian striker.
Paris duo Mathilde Bourdieu and Julie Dufour faced rejection from smart saves by goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, while substitute Louise Fleury wasted a chance in the second half, requiring Chelsea to work hard for their victory.
Emma Hayes expressed confidence that Chelsea would progress to the next round, stating, “We’ve played three games in six days, and I think tonight was the fallout from that. We looked very tired in the first half. However, I believe we have the quality to advance from the group, and that is our goal.”
This match demonstrated that, despite having to work hard, Chelsea’s outstanding performance, particularly from Sam Kerr, significantly contributed to their victory. Chelsea must now focus on rectifying some mistakes to compete better on their journey towards the tournament’s pinnacle.
