USA Sends Second Aircraft Carrier to the Mediterranean to Deter Gaza Tensions and Provide Strategic Support to Israel
On Saturday, the US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, announced the deployment of a second aircraft carrier group to the Mediterranean in response to escalating tensions in the Gaza Strip and signs of the Israeli Armed Forces preparing for a possible ground invasion. It is important to mention that the US warships do not intend to participate in Israel’s military operations. The objective behind this move is to send a message of deterrence to Iran and groups like the Lebanese Shia organization Hezbollah, in order to prevent them from taking advantage of the situation to launch attacks on the Jewish state. In a statement, Austin said that it is meant to “discourage hostile actions against Israel or any attempt to escalate this war after Hamas’s attack on Israel.” Additionally, the second aircraft carrier group will be led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, a sophisticated nuclear-powered vessel, according to Efe. The first group of warships sent by the US to the region, headed by the USS Gerald R. Ford, arrived this week in waters near Israel.
Furthermore, the United States has bolstered its military presence in the region through the deployment of combat aircraft, including sophisticated aircraft such as the F-35 and F-15. This deployment aims to act as a deterrent force, showcasing the determination of the United States to support Israel and maintain stability in the region. The presence of these aircraft carrier groups and other military assets sends a clear message to Iran and extremist groups like Hezbollah, indicating that any attempt to exploit the situation and attack Israel will be met with a decisive response. Just hours after the horrific Hamas attack, the United States began moving warships and aircraft to the region to provide Israel with whatever it needed. It is worth mentioning that following the conflict, dozens of US aircraft are headed to US military bases throughout the Middle East. Special operations forces are now assisting the Israeli military in planning and intelligence. The first shipment of additional ammunition has already arrived. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will travel to Israel to meet with Israeli leaders and discuss what more the United States can offer.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced that a small special operations cell was assisting Israel with intelligence and planning. Likewise, they are providing advice and consultations to the Israeli Defense Forces regarding hostage recovery efforts. However, these forces have not been assigned the task of rescuing hostages, which would put them on the ground fighting in the conflict. This is something that the Biden administration has not approved, and White House spokesperson John Kirby has stated that the Israelis do not want it.

In light of this, the United States is also pushing US defense companies to expedite orders for weapons that were already on Israel’s books. The main focus is on ammunition for Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system, according to The Associated Press. “We are increasing additional military assistance, including ammunition and interceptors to replenish the Iron Dome,” said President Joe Biden on Tuesday. “We are going to make sure that Israel does not run out of these critical assets to defend its cities and its citizens,” added the President.
