Jeep Reconnaissance, the upcoming off-road electric SUV from Jeep, was initially thought to be exclusively electric. Designed on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, which is specifically tailored for electric vehicles, the Recon was expected to be a shining example of Jeep’s commitment to electrification. However, recent reports suggest that Jeep may introduce a hybrid option for the Recon, alongside the all-electric version.
If Jeep indeed decides to offer a hybrid variant of the Recon, it could indicate a shift in the industry’s perception of electric vehicles. Many major automakers, including GM, have faced challenges with electric vehicle demand and have had to reevaluate their strategies. This potential hybrid model from Jeep could be a sign of wavering confidence in the all-electric future that many companies have been working towards.
The Recon is scheduled for launch in 2025, and its final specifications are still being finalized. The vehicle is positioned as a competitor to the Land Rover Defender, offering considerable off-road capabilities and fully removable doors similar to the Jeep Wrangler. The electric version is expected to have a power output of approximately 600 bhp and a range of 600 kilometers.
Antonio Filosa, CEO of Jeep, hinted at the possibility of a hybrid Recon while confirming that the upcoming Wagoneer S will remain an electric-only model. He emphasized Jeep’s commitment to electrification but acknowledged the versatility of the Recon’s platform, leaving room for different powertrain options.
While a gasoline-only version of the Recon is unlikely, a hybrid model, potentially a plug-in hybrid, could join Jeep’s PHEV lineup. Jeep’s success with models like the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe suggests that a hybrid Recon could be well-received by consumers.
