The legendary Tyrrell P34 Formula One car with six wheels is up for sale.

One of the most iconic Formula One cars of all time, the six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 racing car from the late 1970s, will cross the auction block next month. The unique design of the P34 was a creative solution to place the front tires within reach of the car’s front wing, reducing drag for a higher top speed on the straights and “cleaning up” the airflow over the rear wing, while maintaining a large contact patch for gripping and turning effectively. Tyrrell designers installed four small 10-inch wheels in the front and regular wheels in the rear.

The Tyrrell P34 was first driven by South African driver Jody Scheckter in 1976, scoring one win and championship points in 10 of its 12 races, but lost its competitive edge in 1977 and was scrapped for the 1978 season. While he had no success with the six-wheeled Tyrrell, apart from his singular victory at the 1977 Swedish Grand Prix, Scheckter won the 1979 Formula One World Championship driving for Ferrari.

The car features a period-correct Ford-Cosworth V8 and a Hewland six-speed manual transmission. Although there has been no competition under its wheels, the car has performed well in historic events and is eligible for historic competitions.

Only seven P34s were completed during the 1970s (this car has been nicknamed chassis number eight) and with two destroyed, one of the five remaining finished cars was sold in 2012 through a UK specialist for £750,000 (1, 5 million Australian dollars). This car is estimated to sell for between 450,000 and 650,000 euros (750,000 and 1.1 million Australian dollars), well below the range of 5.25 million euros to 6.5 million euros (between 8, 7 and 11 million Australian dollars) seen in Scheckter’s 1979 model, Ferrari 312 T4 winner of the F1 World Championship. It will be auctioned at the same event.
