BMW Unveils New Electric SUV as Part of Neue Klasse Project

BMW has provided a sneak peek at its upcoming electric SUV as part of its Neue Klasse project, which aims to accelerate the development of its electric vehicle lineup. The new electric SUV is set to launch in 2026 and will be the successor to the BMW iX3. This model will be one of six new models that BMW is currently working on as part of this project. The company aims to have all six models on the road between 2025 and 2027.

The BMW iX3 electric SUV was briefly shown as a disguised prototype at a media presentation of the BMW Vision Neue Klasse concept car in Munich. Although attention was focused on the Vision Neue Klasse concept, which showcases the electric version of the next-generation Series 3 sedan, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse revealed that the Neue Klasse project encompasses multiple models. The project is a comprehensive design, engineering, and sustainability program that will shape the future of BMW’s electric vehicles.

Zipse stated, “The Neue Klasse is not just a car. It is a completely new generation of cars. We plan to have six models on the road in 24 months between 2025 and 2027.” The first production model of the Neue Klasse will be a four-door sedan modeled after the Vision Neue Klasse concept car. This model is expected to hit the roads in 2025 and will feature the design and technology showcased in the concept. Following this sedan, five more electric models will be introduced, including the new electric SUV.

The Neue Klasse models will be built on a new dedicated electric vehicle architecture, designed specifically for these vehicles. BMW aims to improve the power density, charging speeds, and battery life of these vehicles compared to their predecessors. The sixth-generation electric drivetrain that will be used in the Neue Klasse models will offer a 20% improvement in power density, 30% faster charging speeds, and a 30% increase in battery life.

Production of the Neue Klasse models is scheduled to begin in 2025 at BMW’s plant in Debrecen, Hungary. The company also has plans to produce these models at its plants in Germany, China, and Mexico. The goal is to ensure that these vehicles are widely available and accessible to customers around the world.

The unveiling of the BMW Vision Neue Klasse concept car showcased the innovative features and technologies that will be part of the Neue Klasse project. This includes a new platform specifically designed for electric vehicles and the sixth-generation electric drivetrain. With these advancements, BMW aims to offer customers an enhanced driving experience and contribute to the transition towards sustainable mobility.

Overall, BMW’s Neue Klasse project represents a significant step forward in the company’s electrification efforts. By introducing six new electric models in the next few years, BMW is committing to a sustainable future and meeting the growing demand for electric vehicles. With the upcoming electric SUV set to launch in 2026, BMW is poised to make a mark in the electric vehicle market and solidify its position as a leader in the industry.
