Why Was Brooke Burke Tempted to “Cheat” With Derek Hough During DWTS

Brooke Burke revealed that she and her Dancing With the Stars partner, Derek Hough, shared such a strong bond during their time on the show that she contemplated being romantic with him.

The ballroom heated up, thanks to Brooke Burke’s recent confession.

The 52-year-old man was candid about the relationship he formed with his partner Derek Hough while competing on Dancing With the Stars in 2008.

“I just thought [Derek] was still very young, green, and safe,” said Brooke on the October 8 episode of Cheryl Burke’s podcast, Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans. “I didn’t expect him to be such a strong and tough choreographer.”

However, as the pair got to know each other throughout the season, producers arranged for them to attend couples therapy, as they weren’t “clicking.” Shortly after, Brooke ultimately “crushed on Derek.”

“If I hadn’t been married, I probably would have hoped that we would be in a romantic relationship,” said the television host, who was then married to actor David Charvet. “You get intertwined with someone’s body when you’re a dancer. I’ve never been so connected—except with a lover or a husband—than I was with Derek.”

And Brooke highly praised the therapy for helping them get on the same page and eventually winning the mirror ball trophy.

She continued, “Something magical happened; we found trust in each other, at least I did, and we decided to win.”

Further explaining the bond, Brooke noted, “So for three months, you’re in someone’s arms. Why do you think people fall in love?”

Their time on DWTS not only included performing in front of a live audience week after week but also daily rehearsals and putting complete trust in Derek.

“It can be more intimate than making love in the bedroom—you make love on the dance floor, you feel more connected,” said Brooke. “If you have the energy, you do this dance, and you’re in rhythm, then there’s trust, then you share fears, you do something you’ve never done before. How many times do you go through that? an experience with someone where that’s all you have?”

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the teammates.

“He was very tough; he was very tough on me,” Brooke said about Derek’s teaching style. “I’m okay with tough love. He didn’t love me through routines and coddle me, and say it was amazing. He was very honest.”

How did her time on the show affect her marriage with David? Well, the answer might surprise listeners.

“My marriage was great,” Brooke shared. “I was tired at night, but David really knew how to perform. My family really stepped up to fill in the gaps in raising each other. David was very supportive, and he’s a bit of an achiever, so he understood the pressure.” (The couple later separated in 2018 and finalized their divorce in 2020.)
