FIFA President Gianni Infantino Pushes for Immediate Action Against Racism

FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently met with Vinicius Junior, a player from Real Madrid, to address the issue of racism in football. Infantino emphasized the need for a “zero tolerance” approach towards racism and called on referees at all levels to halt matches when incidents occur.

Following Vinicius Junior’s public outcry after experiencing racist abuse during a match this season, Infantino denounced the perpetrators as “criminals” and stressed that football authorities must assume responsibility for combating this issue.

Real Madrid lodged a complaint with the Spanish State Attorney General’s Office last month, classifying the racist mistreatment of Vinicius as a hate crime, subsequent to the player being targeted during a LaLiga match against Valencia.

“It is crucial not only to discuss racism and discrimination but to take decisive and convincing action with zero tolerance,” stated Infantino after meeting with Vinicius and the Brazil squad in Barcelona. “Without eradicating racism, there can be no football – we must put an end to such incidents.”

Infantino highlighted that referees in FIFA competitions have the authority to stop matches in response to racism, and similar actions must be taken at all levels of the sport, including national competitions. He stressed that racism is a problem specific to football and should not be excused by attributing it solely to broader societal issues. Instead, forceful and determined measures are required within the football community.

“We aim to identify individuals engaging in racism within stadiums and on social media platforms. These individuals are criminals and should be banned from attending matches worldwide,” declared Infantino. “Authorities must take legal action against these offenders, and FIFA will convey this message unequivocally. Racism is a crime.”

Infantino also announced that FIFA would establish a task force, with Vinicius assuming a prominent role, to develop specific recommendations and further anti-racism measures within football.
