Five Recruiting Battles That Sparked Controversy in the East

Most Contested Recruiting Battles in the East

As official visit season approaches, recruiting battles are heating up across the country. In the East, there are five recruitments that are of particular interest and are still being heavily contested by multiple schools.

1. KJ Stewart

Contenders: South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Miami, Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, Alabama, Penn State

Overview: KJ Stewart, a four-star linebacker from Washington D.C., has been heavily recruited by South Carolina. The Gamecocks have been doing a great job recruiting in the D.C. area and have put the full-court press on Stewart. However, Tennessee recently hosted him on a visit, and Georgia, Miami, Ohio State, and South Carolina all have official visits scheduled over the next few weekends. Other contenders for his recruitment include Michigan, Oregon, Alabama, and Penn State. Stewart is expected to make a decision sometime in the fall.

2. Tyler Booker

Contenders: Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Boston College

Overall: Tyler Booker, a four-star offensive tackle from Massachusetts, was initially a favorite for Notre Dame but has since seen his recruitment open up. Ohio State is considered a major contender for him and is scheduled to host him for an official visit on June 16. Penn State and Boston College also have official visits scheduled for this month. Notre Dame will have another opportunity to make an impression when Booker visits South Bend again this coming weekend.

3. Keon Sabb

Contenders: Florida, Georgia, Penn State

Overview: Keon Sabb, a four-star safety out of New Jersey, is being heavily recruited by Florida and Georgia. Sabb is expected to announce his commitment before August and will be visiting both schools this month. While momentum seems to be on the side of Georgia, Penn State, who Sabb has connections to, is still in the mix.

4. Aiden Gobaira

Contenders: Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Miami, Virginia Tech

Overview: Aiden Gobaira, a four-star defensive end from Virginia, has a full schedule of official visits planned for this month. He will visit Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia, and Miami. Virginia Tech is also working hard to get him back on campus for an official visit before he commits. Gobaira is not expected to commit before August.

5. Javon Nelson

Contenders: Florida, NC State, Tennessee, Penn State, Georgia

Overview: Javon Nelson, a four-star defensive end from North Carolina, recently released a top five of Florida, NC State, Tennessee, Penn State, and Georgia. Florida and Tennessee are currently the main contenders for him, with the Vols getting him on campus last weekend for an unofficial visit and scheduled to host him for an official visit later this month. NC State has been recruiting Nelson for a while but has ground to make up, while Penn State and Georgia are still trying to make an impression.

Overall, these five recruitments are still heavily contested and could go in a number of directions. As official visit season begins, it will be interesting to see how these and other recruitments develop.
