Hyundai Australia predicts a rise in hybrid sales following the introduction of new models.

Hyundai Takes on Toyota with Gasoline-Electric Models

Hyundai is gearing up to challenge Toyota’s dominance in the hybrid car market by introducing gasoline-electric versions of popular models like the Tucson midsize family SUV and the new seven-seater Santa Fe.

The move comes as Hyundai Australia aims to capture a significant share of the hybrid vehicle market, predicting that one in four new car sales this year will feature petrol-electric hybrid power. Currently, Hyundai offers hybrid technology in models like the new generation Kona small SUV, i30 sedan, and Santa Fe seven-seater, directly competing with Toyota’s offerings like the Corolla Cruz, Corolla sedan, and Kluger SUV.

But the lineup of hybrid vehicles from Hyundai is set to expand, with plans in place to introduce hybrid options for the Tucson mid-size SUV and the next-generation Santa Fe. Additionally, the Staria people transporter and Staria Load commercial van could also see hybrid versions by the end of the year, following the successful launch of the fuel-efficient model in Hyundai’s home market of South Korea.

Andrew Tuitahi, Hyundai Australia’s product director, anticipates that hybrids could account for up to 35 percent of the company’s total sales by the end of the year. With emissions standards becoming increasingly stringent, Hyundai is well-positioned to meet the demand for alternative propulsion systems. The company’s hybrid models combine a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, offering power outputs ranging from 104kW/265Nm to 169kW/350Nm.

The upcoming Tucson and overseas Staria models will also feature a version of the 1.6-liter turbocharged hybrid system. Despite the higher costs associated with a more complex powertrain, Tuitahi is confident that Australians are ready to embrace hybrids, considering the advantages in terms of total cost of ownership.

Hybrid vehicles have been gaining popularity in Australia, with 98,439 new hybrid cars sold last year, accounting for 8.1 percent of all new car sales. Toyota and Lexus dominated the market, with eight of the top 10 best-selling hybrids in 2023. Models like the RAV4, Corolla, NX, and Yaris were among the popular choices for hybrid enthusiasts.

As Hyundai prepares to introduce more hybrid models to its lineup, the competition in the hybrid market is expected to intensify. With a strong focus on fuel efficiency and sustainability, Hyundai is poised to make significant inroads in the hybrid car segment and challenge Toyota’s stronghold in the market.
