Lamborghini Aims to Find the Perfect Sound for its First Electric Vehicle

However, Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s technical director, recently revealed that the company is actively exploring various options to create a suitable and authentic sound experience for its electric vehicles.

In an interview with Trip, Mohr emphasized that Lamborghini is committed to being as genuine as possible when it comes to the sound of their electric vehicles. He stated that completely synthetic noise that bears no relation to the vehicle’s actions is something Lamborghini cannot accept. Mohr further explained, “Right now, it’s one of the most important things. There is still a long way to go until the brand finds the perfect sound. We have some ideas, we have some proposals, but at the moment we still haven’t decided what the final production car will have.”

Balancing the desire for authenticity with the limitations of electric powertrains presents a formidable challenge for Lamborghini. Mohr believes that the sounds for their electric vehicles will primarily come from the powertrain itself. Lamborghini intends to incorporate certain sounds from the engine and inverter, enhancing them with synthetic elements to create a harmonious and engaging experience for the driver.

“We’re experimenting with taking the frequencies that we have from electric motors, amplifying something, removing something, and especially correlating this as closely as possible to the condition of the transmission,” said Mohr. He expressed a concern that other electric vehicles have artificial noises that do not align with the vehicle’s actual behavior, creating a disconnect between what the car is doing and what the sound suggests it’s doing.

Electric motors and inverters produce distinct noises during acceleration, regenerative braking, and other events, such as field weakening at high speeds. However, these sounds are often subtle due to the high efficiency of electric systems and their isolation from the cabin. Lamborghini aims to make these noises more pronounced and distinctive, potentially resulting in a unique and captivating sound profile for their electric vehicles. Porsche has adopted a similar approach with the Taycan, and Maserati is also exploring the possibilities of creating compelling electric vehicle sounds.

While Lamborghini strives to innovate and adapt to the electric age, Mohr emphasizes that the combustion engine still plays a vital role in the brand’s identity. He recognizes that some elements of Lamborghini’s iconic sound are already synthetic, but the transition to electrification will require a whole new level of sound design. Mohr explains, “What you hear today in a combustion car is also sound [that’s] designed, let me tell you. But the basic sound comes from something real, 99% of the time.”
