Seamless Mobile Payment: Pay with Your iPhone

Many Madrid residents rely on public transport to commute and travel around the city. It is a convenient and cost-effective option, especially for those with a youth subscription. Now, with the implementation of a new payment method through iPhones, the process has become even easier.

Previously, commuters had to find a machine to recharge their transport card, but now, they can do it directly from their iPhone. This simple and quick process allows users to scan their card and pay for their subscription or individual trips without the need for a physical machine. Although some cities allow payment at turnstiles with Apple Pay, this feature is not available in Madrid yet.

The transport cards in Madrid provide access to bus, metro, light rail, tram, and commuter trains. The pricing for these cards is subject to the policies of the central government, with different rates for various zones and subscription types. However, the prices are expected to decrease starting from January 1, 2024.

To recharge the transport pass from an iPhone, users simply need to ensure that they have iOS 14 or later installed. They can then download the “Transportation Card” app from the App Store, which allows them to scan their card and recharge it directly from their phone. This convenient method eliminates the need to queue at subway stations or deal with malfunctioning machines.

With the introduction of this new payment method, commuting and traveling around Madrid using public transport has become even more accessible and user-friendly. As technology continues to advance, it’s clear that the transportation system in Madrid is evolving to provide a more seamless experience for its residents.
