Toyota Australia decides not to offer sub-$30,000 Yaris Hybrid for 2024 after originally denying intentions and discontinuing petrol models.

2024 Toyota Yaris Hybrid Reintroduced in Australia After Initially Being Scrapped

Toyota Australia has made a surprising move by reintroducing a new base variant of the Yaris Hybrid, just weeks after announcing the removal of regular petrol versions and stating they had “no plans” for a sub-$30,000 hybrid grade. The announcement comes as a shock to many, as Toyota had recently axed cheaper petrol variants of the Yaris lineup.

With the elimination of the gasoline variants, the price of the cheapest Yaris would have increased significantly. However, Toyota has introduced a new hybrid version of the Ascent Sport priced at $28,500, along with the SX at $31,960 and the ZR at $34,530. These updated models boast new style and technology features, contradicting the previous statement that there were no plans for a more affordable hybrid option.

Sean Hanley, Toyota’s Australian sales and marketing boss, had previously stated that $30,000 was the lowest price at which Toyota could sell a modern hybrid passenger car with expected safety features. However, the introduction of the new hybrid models contradicts this claim, offering buyers more affordable hybrid options within the Yaris range.

The 2024 Yaris range also comes with updates to the Toyota Safety Sense suite, including new autonomous emergency braking system features and improved intersection collision prevention. Inside, the infotainment system has been upgraded to an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and built-in satellite navigation.

Each variant of the Yaris comes equipped with a gasoline-electric hybrid system that combines a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 85 kW. The range is powered by a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and is claimed to deliver fuel economy of 3.3 liters per 100 km.

In terms of pricing, the 2024 Toyota Yaris range includes the following models:
– Yaris Ascent Sport: $28,500
– Yaris SX: $31,960
– Yaris ZR: $34,530
*Prices exclude on-road costs.

The reintroduction of the Yaris Hybrid lineup showcases Toyota’s commitment to providing more affordable hybrid options to Australian customers. With updated features and technology, the 2024 Yaris range aims to offer a compelling choice for buyers looking for a modern, fuel-efficient vehicle.
