Trent Alexander-Arnold Scores Equalizer in Tense Match Between Manchester City and Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the equalizing goal in the final minutes, giving Liverpool one point in the encounter between the top two teams in the Premier League at Etihad Stadium against Manchester City.

In a game that did not reach the heights of previous encounters between the main domestic powers in recent times, defending champions City took the lead when Erling Haaland capitalized on Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson’s mistake.

This made him the fastest player to reach 50 Premier League goals – in his 48th match – and gave City an advantage they held until the closing stages.

Ruben Dias seemed to have added City’s second goal, but his goal was ruled out for a foul on Alisson, before Alexander-Arnold made Pep Guardiola’s team pay for their failure to finish off Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold had a tough game defensively trying to contain the lively Jeremy Doku, but he demonstrated his quality 10 minutes from time with a sharp, low shot from the edge of the area that gave Ederson no chance.

City remains at the top of the table, but they might consider this as a missed opportunity, while Liverpool will be satisfied with a draw.

Man City Frustrated
City and Guardiola will know that they missed a chance to strike a blow against the team many expect to emerge as their closest challengers for the title this season.

City had the better chances and felt they had a good case for a second goal when Manuel Akanji was adjudged to have fouled Alisson at a second-half corner before Dias tapped home.

Haaland could have had more, most agonizingly in the closing seconds when his header drifted inches beyond the far post.

Doku was a constant threat for City on the left flank as he gave Alexander-Arnold a tough time, while Nathan Ake was outstanding in ensuring Mohamed Salah was subdued.

Guardiola was perpetual motion in his technical area, at one point having to be asked to return there by the fourth official after wandering yards down the touchline, and in the second half, he turned to the home fans to demand more volume as City pushed for a second goal that would probably have secured the three points.

Guardiola was then involved in what looked like an angry exchange of words with Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez after the final whistle, perhaps betraying his emotions after a game he will consider as one that got away.

Liverpool Satisfied with a Point
Alexander-Arnold turned the taunts back on City’s fans after he drilled Liverpool’s crucial equalizer past Ederson.

It had not been the easiest afternoon for Alexander-Arnold in the face of the direct running and trickery of Doku, but his ability on the ball has never been questioned, and he showed it again to earn Liverpool a point.

And the sight of Liverpool taking their time as the game went into the closing stages and eight minutes of stoppage time suggested Jurgen Klopp’s side were happy with that share of the spoils.z z z z z z z z z

Liverpool, as they have done on previous occasions this season, showed that they are a constant menace who must be put away when you get chances.

They were nowhere near their best, but a team with this array of attacking talent, augmented by Alexander-Arnold, always has a puncher’s chance, and they proved it again as they left with a valuable point.
