Whoopi Goldberg is teaming up with a black streaming service to create kid-friendly content catered to black audiences.

Whoopi Goldberg Launches New Streaming Service Blkfam, Aiming to Provide Kid-Friendly Content for Black Audiences

The Oscar-winning actress and co-host of “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg, has recently announced her partnership with the black streaming service known as Blkfam. The service is dedicated to providing free, kid-friendly content for black audiences.

Goldberg, who is also an equity investor in Blkfam, shared her excitement about the venture during a recent interview with Variety. She emphasized the importance of creating content that reflects the diversity of the black community, especially for young viewers.

“I have a 10-year-old great-granddaughter — and there isn’t a lot of content out there created by people who look like her, for her,” Goldberg stated. “I feel like we’re not always represented in the best possible way.”

She also expressed her enthusiasm for being part of a project that has the potential to make a lasting impact. “As I get older, I say, ‘Wow, things will outlast me.’ This is one of the things I hope outlasts me — I could be the Black woman Walt Disney!” Goldberg added.

Blkfam was founded by digital media veteran Larry Adams, who reached out to Goldberg to discuss an investment opportunity. The streaming service officially launched yesterday, featuring over 1,000 hours of child-friendly content.

Adams explained that the motivation behind creating Blkfam was the lack of family-friendly programming for black audiences on existing platforms. He wanted to provide a space where black families could enjoy entertainment without facing stereotypes or biases.

The content library of Blkfam includes syndicated series, animation titles, and original music-driven content. Additionally, the service has 10 original series in development that are scheduled to debut throughout the year.

“We’ve built a service reflecting true inclusion and diversity, where Black parents and children especially can feel holistically represented,” Adams stated.

Notable content partners for Blkfam include Candle Media’s ATTN and PlayWatch Kids. PlayWatch owner Jimmy Jenkins expressed excitement about the partnership, calling it a historic moment for families worldwide.

Adams emphasized that Blkfam’s business model focuses on financing original series through brand partnerships. This curated approach aims to offer unique and diverse content that showcases faces and stories not commonly seen on mainstream platforms.

While Goldberg’s involvement in Blkfam has sparked interest and discussion, some critics have raised concerns about the service’s focus on racial identity. Given the competitive landscape of streaming services, the success of Blkfam remains to be seen.

Despite the challenges ahead, Goldberg and Adams are determined to provide a platform that celebrates black culture and storytelling for generations to come. With a commitment to inclusivity and diversity, Blkfam aims to make a positive impact on the entertainment industry and the lives of black families.
