York Regional Police in Toronto Area Conducts Intense Takedown of Suspected Armed Carjackers
On April 13, 2024, York Regional Police (YRP) released a video showcasing a dramatic takedown of suspected armed carjackers in the Toronto-area region just north of Toronto’s six boroughs. The video footage captures the intense moment when officers utilized stun grenades, tactical gear, and at least four police vehicles to apprehend the suspects who were violently resisting arrest.
The YRP press release accompanying the video reveals that the incident began on April 6, when three car thieves attempted to steal a Mercedes GLC. However, the owner of the Mercedes and her husband fought back, thwarting the thieves’ efforts. The suspects then fled in a white Acura RDX, a vehicle that had been stolen a week prior.
The same Acura RDX was later used in a successful carjacking of a “blue BMW” in Toronto the following day. The suspects involved in that carjacking were eventually apprehended by the Toronto Police Service on April 12 after crashing into police vehicles.
On April 13, the YRP located the fleeing RDX and mobilized their investigators along with the Emergency Response Unit (SWAT) for the arrest. The operation involved the use of flashbangs, distraction devices that produce a flash of light and loud noises. The suspects, three males aged 18, 16, and 15, attempted to flee on foot and were seen dropping a loaded firearm during the pursuit.
The three suspects were charged with numerous property and firearms offenses. However, the YRP believes that other individuals connected to the same criminal network are still at large. They are urging the public to come forward with any information regarding the case.
