Bayer Leverkusen Returns to the Top of Bundesliga with a 4-0 Victory Over Union Berlin

Leverkusen, November 13, 2023 – Bayer Leverkusen has reclaimed the top spot in the Bundesliga after securing a 4-0 home victory against Union Berlin.

Xabi Alonso’s coached team has accumulated 31 points out of a possible 33 this season, matching the record set by Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in the 2015-2016 season.

Alex Grimaldo, Odilon Kossounou, Jonathan Tah, and Nathan Tella were the goal scorers as Leverkusen replaced Bayern at the summit of the standings.

“The feeling at the moment is incredible,” said former Spanish and Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso. “We played with high focus and concentration. However, there are still many matches to be played, and a lot can happen in football; suddenly, all expectations can vanish.”

Leverkusen has won 16 out of 17 matches in all competitions this season, including an impressive 12-game winning streak.

Alonso was appointed as the coach in October last year when Leverkusen was second from the bottom of the table after eight games. They finished the season in sixth place and reached the Europa League semi-finals.

Alonso’s managerial experience was previously limited to a three-year spell as the coach of Real Sociedad’s B team, following his retirement as a player in 2017.zzzzzzzzzzz

Defending champions Bayern regained the top spot in the table with a 4-2 victory over Heidenheim on Saturday.

Union Berlin remains at the bottom of the table only on goal difference after suffering a club-record ninth successive defeat.
