Biden Closes Gap on Trump Ahead of Election Day

In a new poll announced recently, President Joe Biden has narrowed the gap with former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) to just two percentage points. This comes ahead of the upcoming presidential elections in November, at a time when the majority of voters express negative opinions about both contenders.

According to the NBC News survey released on Sunday, Biden has closed the previous gap with Trump to just two points (44% – 46%) in this race. The proportion of voters expressing a strong interest in the presidential race has reached its lowest level in almost 20 years, with only 64% of registered voters showing high interest in the elections.

The survey conducted from April 12 to 16 coincided with a turbulent period in American politics, including the start of Trump’s criminal trial in New York and heightened tensions in the Middle East. Biden, 81, leads Trump, 77, on issues related to abortion rights and national unity, while Trump is ahead in terms of competence and handling of inflation.

Inflation and immigration top the list of the most important issues facing the country, according to the latest national survey by NBC News. Only a third of voters credit Biden for an economic improvement. The survey conducted by Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates and Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies showed a lack of consensus among Americans, with a collective desire to pay less attention to the elections.

The survey shows that the two candidates are essentially tied among independent voters (Biden 36%, Trump 34%), as well as among those aged 18 to 34 (Biden 44%, Trump 43%). The presence of independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. further complicates the presidential race, potentially altering the stable balance. Trump leads Biden by two percentage points in a direct face-off, but in a vote including five candidates, Biden edges out Trump by two points in a contest that includes Kennedy and other third-party candidates.

As the election landscape evolves with the participation of multiple candidates and differing opinions among voters, the race for the presidency remains competitive and unpredictable.
