Derek Hough took to Instagram on Friday to offer a reassuring update on the condition of his wife, Hayley Erbert, after she was hospitalized earlier in the week for a cranial hematoma.
“Hayley has always inspired me with her will, her strength, and her resilience and no more so than in the last 48 hours,” wrote the Dancing With The Stars judge. Erbert, 29, is a professional dancer on the show.
Hough had initially informed fans of Erbert’s hospitalization on Wednesday, revealing that she had suffered a bleed in her brain and required an emergency craniectomy.
In his Friday update, Hough expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support and love that he and Erbert have received during this challenging time. He stated, “Hayley is now on the long road to recovery,” and emphasized that the kindness shown to them has been immeasurable.
He also thanked everyone for their offers of assistance and called the support “humbling and appreciated.” Hough concluded his message with a message of hope for the future, saying, “Our hope is that as a family, we can somehow and some way pay it forward.”
A cranial hematoma, as per the Mayo Clinic, is “a collection of blood within the skull,” often caused by a burst blood vessel in the brain or by trauma such as a car accident or fall. The blood may collect in the brain tissue or underneath the skull, causing pressure on the brain.
Hough did not provide specific details about Erbert’s diagnosis in his initial announcement, but he did express his gratitude towards the first responders and medical personnel who have been caring for her, and asked for prayers and positivity.
