Review of the 2023 Volkswagen T-Roc R

The 2023 Volkswagen T-Roc R, Volkswagen’s most affordable performance car, offers small, compact and sturdy performance. Despite the smaller size, the T-Roc R boasts a high-performance 2.0-liter engine, nappa leather seats, and a 9.2-inch infotainment screen, standard in this model and for some of this model’s competitors. The T-Roc R comes in at a competitive price of $63,490 plus on-road costs. The R-Line, the second model in the T-Roc family, starts at $47,990 before on-road costs.

The car’s interior feels very efficient, but is somewhat dark. Despite feeling cramped for space, the interior is practical. Head and leg room is sufficient in both the front and back seats. The front seats come in nappa leather and are comfortable for long road trips, while the back seats feature two USB-C ports, air vents, small door bins and map pockets. The boot size is 392 liters with the back seats up, but when folded down, the space increases to 1237L.

The T-Roc R comes with a 9.2-inch infotainment system, capable of wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The six-speaker sound system that comes standard in all T-Rocs can be upgraded to an eight-channel amplifier and subwoofer.

ANCAP has awarded the T-Roc range the maximum five stars for safety in 2017, but due to the ongoing testing and qualification updates, an earlier five star result may not match that of a vehicle tested under the most recent criteria.

Overall, the T-Roc R represents a competitive option in the performance car market, offering a balance of power, affordability, and practicality. With an intricate focus on detail, and a sleek exterior, the T-Roc R is a car worth considering for those interested in both performance and comfort.

As for the next steps, it would be wise for the buyer to consider other cars in the same price range such as the Audi SQ2 and the relatively new Cupra Formentor. Other potential options include the Volkswagen Tiguan R and the Golf R, if they prefer to stick within the Volkswagen family.
