Hyundai’s Most Powerful Electric Car to Compete in South Korea Racing Championship
Hyundai has announced that the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5N, the most powerful road-going Hyundai ever built and the company’s first high-performance electric car, will compete in a one-make racing championship in South Korea next year. The news was revealed during a customer event in South Korea, where images of the eN1 Cup, based on the Ioniq 5N, were displayed to the public.
The eN1 Cup is expected to feature a wider body than its showroom counterpart, with more aggressive bumpers, a tall rear spoiler, and center-locking racing wheels. While the road-going Ioniq 5N weighs around two tonnes due to its large battery, the eN1 Cup is reported to be 200-250kg lighter, thanks to the use of polycarbonate side and rear windows, removal of the interior, and the installation of an FIA-approved six-point roll cage in place of the rear seats.
In addition to the weight reduction, the eN1 Cup will feature 18-inch wheels paired with slick racing tires, six-piston brake calipers on the front axle, four-piston calipers on the rear axle, and an adjustable racing suspension that will lower the race car’s ride height by 50-70mm. It will also be equipped with an air jack system, allowing pit crews to easily lift the vehicle during pit stops to change tires.
Furthermore, the eN1 Cup will include a special set of artificial driving sounds called Hyundai’s N Active Sound+, which racing teams will reportedly be able to customize. It is not known whether the eN1 Cup will have more power than the road-going Ioniq 5N, which is equipped with dual 478 kW and 740 Nm electric motors, enabling it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 260 km/h.
Hyundai is expected to complete development of the Ioniq 5N eN1 in February 2024, with a full unveiling to follow. The one-make racing series based on the eN1 Cup is set to launch in South Korea in May 2024. The Hyundai Ioniq 5N eN1 is likely to make a significant impact on the electric car racing scene, bringing Hyundai to the forefront of high-performance electric vehicle technology.
