Toyota is bringing back the Starlet Hatch and introducing a rally-ready GR model, according to reports.

Toyota Starlet GR: A Revival of a Classic Hatchback

The Toyota Starlet, once a beloved and respected model in the automotive world, is set to make a comeback. This classic hatchback, known for its lightweight construction and lively performance, is rumored to be revived by Toyota with a new GR high-performance model in development.

Reports from The Best Car Website, which accurately leaked details about the GR Supra and Corolla GR before their releases, suggest that the Starlet was initially slated to replace the Toyota Passo subcompact this season. The new Starlet was supposed to ride on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. However, due to an audit of Daihatsu engineering following a safety scandal, the launch of the Starlet has been delayed until 2026.

The Toyota GR Starlet, affectionately dubbed the GRlet by enthusiasts, is said to weigh under 2,200 pounds to maintain its lightweight and spirited nature. Unlike many modern vehicles, the GR Starlet will not feature hybrid technology, making it a rare non-hybrid offering in Toyota’s lineup.

To enhance performance, the GR Starlet will have a wider track, larger brakes, and a turbocharged three-cylinder engine based on the GR Corolla and Yaris powertrains. The engine, downsized from 1.6 liters to 1.3 liters, is expected to produce around 150 horsepower. While torque may be reduced, an increased redline of 7,200 rpm is anticipated.

Transmissions for the GR Starlet will include a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic, similar to the updated GR Corolla. However, unlike other GR hatchbacks, the GR Starlet will be front-wheel drive only, possibly to align with Toyota’s plans to homologate a WRC Rally4 version for competition.

As a lower-priced performance model, the GR Starlet is estimated to start between $15,850 and $17,750. Unfortunately, the model may not be available in the United States, where Toyota ceased offering subcompacts after discontinuing the Yaris. American enthusiasts will have to admire the GR Starlet from a distance, much like the coveted GRMN model.

Enthusiasts and fans of the iconic Toyota Starlet can look forward to the revival of this classic hatchback with a modern twist. The GR Starlet promises to deliver a thrilling driving experience and pay homage to its legendary predecessor. Contact the author, James, at james@thedrive.com for any further inquiries or feedback.
