Google has announced the availability of Passkey on Google Cloud and Workspace, giving more than 9 million organizations the option to use the technology as an alternative to passwords. Passkey was presented by Google as a secure solution for logging in to any website or application, using biometric authentication systems instead of traditional passwords. The technology allows users to use fingerprint or facial recognition, or other screen unlock mechanisms already used in mobiles, laptops, or desktop computers, making the authentication process twice as fast and up to four times fewer errors compared to traditional passwords.

According to Google, Passkey reduces phishing attacks, which is increasingly becoming a sophisticated technique. More than 60% of data vulnerabilities were related to phishing, representing an expense of 4.58 million euros on average for companies and organizations in 2022. In the same period of time, attacks have increased by 61%, reaching the figure of 255 million in just six months.

Organizations now have the option to use Passkey as the first large public cloud provider in Spain with the technology available to all types of clients, including small or large companies, educational centers, and public administrations. With this announcement, Google is stepping firmly to turn its cloud solution into one of the most secure for all types of entities.

The technology used in Passkey is based on Public key cryptographic protocols, which are used in other solutions like the Titan security key. This means that Passkey is a whole wall against phishing and other types of attacks, adding a layer of protection against automated bots, mass phishing attacks, and targeted attacks.

When logging in with Passkey in a Workspace app, the key confirms user access to the device to use the fingerprint or other unlocks mentioned earlier. Biometric data is not stored on Google’s servers or on any other website or app, ensuring data confidentiality and privacy.

Administrators can pass through g.co/passwords and access a tutorial to activate this access key in the administration console. The security feature is reinforced for Workspace and Google Cloud, allowing companies and administrations in Spain to use a fully secure tool.

Passkey was introduced at the beginning of May as a solution to eradicate one of the worst experiences when logging into the same website, and with this announcement, Google is taking a strong step forward to make Passkey available to organizations as a secure alternative to passwords.
